A CONVERSATION WITH FIRST ASSISTANT EDITOR MIKE SAENZ (‘BOYHOOD‘)
We are excited to start off our Fall/Winter series at BOSCPUG with Assistant Editor Mike Saenz, who will share with us his role as first assistant editor in working with editor Sandra Adair, ACE on Richard Linklater’s ‘BOYHOOD (IFC Films).’ Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, ‘BOYHOOD’ is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason, from age 5 to age 18. Mike will share the technical challenges involved in editing a twelve year film shoot, which started on Final Cut Pro and then to Avid and the legacy single finishing workflow that resulted. Mike will also share his view and advice on the role of being an assistant editor. We will allow plenty of time for questions – So bring your questions with you!
ABOUT MIKE SAENZ
His USC short film ‘CASABLANCA’ was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival. As editor, Mike Saenz has cut feature films and documentaries, both long form and short, for theatrical, TV, and web exhibition. His first feature as editor, ‘SPECIAL,’ was selected for the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. He cut ‘IN PERPETUITY,’ a documentary featurette produced by the USC Shoah Foundation Institute in partnership with Steven Spielberg. The film aired with ‘SCHINDLER’S LIST’ on HBO.
Saenz edited Richard Linklater’s first television series, “Up to Speed,” featuring Timothy “Speed” Levitch, and has worked as assistant editor for Sandra Adair on Linklater’s ‘BERNIE,’ ‘BEFORE MIDNIGHT’ and ‘BOYHOOD.’

MUSIC VIDEO: THE BYNARS “Time vs. Money” – by Shaun Clarke
“Time vs. Money” is the official music for The Bynars’ recently released single. The piece combines a nouveau ballet routine with stark black and white photography and dynamic camera and lighting techniques. Featuring dancers Kirsten Evans and Alex Lantz (Festival Ballet Providence). Choreography by Viktor Plotnikov.
ABOUT SHAUN CLARKE
Shaun Clarke is a filmmaker based in Boston, MA. His work often includes collaborations with other performing and visual artists: dancers, musicians, painters, etc. He works extensively as a cinematographer on a wide range of projects: feature length narratives, short narratives, documentaries, commercials and music videos. HIs commercial work has been broadcast nationally, and his creative work screened internationally.
Shaun received his B.F.A. in film and television production from New York University, and an M.F.A. in Media Art from Emerson College. Shaun currently serves an Artist-in-Residence (Film Production & Cinematography) at Emerson College and as a Visiting Lecturer at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

ABOUT THE BRIGHT LIGHTS FILM SERIES
The Bright Lights screening and talk series is sponsored by the Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College. The mission of the series is to provide engaging visual media related events to the Emerson College community as well as the wider Boston community. These events range from screening of student, faculty and alumni work to the work of local, national and international artists as well as demonstrations, lectures, discussions and presentations by industry professionals. Bright Lights seeks to create an environment where visual media is not only viewed and appreciated but where a dialogue is fostered and a community of media makers, academics and aficionados are engaged and supported.
All events are free and open to the public. Events take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening during the semester with the exception of occasions when the college is closed (such as holidays, spring break, inclement weather). ABOUT THE BRIGHT SCREENING ROOM
BOSCPUG is proud to work with Emerson Visual and Media Arts to offer an evening of production and post-production conversation in the intimate and state of the art Bright Family 2K Screening Room at The Paramount Center at Emerson College.
Named for the family of Kevin Bright ’76, the Bright Family Screening Room seats approximately 200 people. It features the latest film and 2K digital video projection including 35mm and DCP playback. The dramatic double-height Gallery and Lobby connects to the Paramount Mainstage.
