‘Circus Without Borders’ – The Story of Artcirq and Kalabante

We’re thrilled to host a special screening of the hugely inspiring documentary ‘CIRCUS WITHOUT BORDERS,’ a visually stunning story about two circus troupes in remote and challenged corners of the world — an Inuit circus in the Canadian Arctic beset by an epidemic of youth suicide, and an African circus in Guinea, ravaged by poverty. Guillaume Saladin and Yamoussa Bangoura, best friends and world-class acrobats from remote corners of the globe, share the same dream: to bring hope and change to their struggling communities through circus. Both troupes use art and the power of dreams to transform themselves and their communities where they help Inuit and Guinean youth achieve unimaginable success. Seven years in the making, this tale of two circuses – Artcirq and Kalabante – is a culture-crossing performance piece that offers a portal into two remote communities, and an inspiring story of resilience and joy.

The film was made by director Susan Gray of Boston-based Northern Light Productions, and Linda Matchan, a distinguished Boston Globe journalist, (Linda broke the rapist-priest story that is featured in ‘SPOTLIGHT’).

Following the screening will be a live performance with Yamoussa and Guillaume, and a Q&A with Susan and Linda, along with the film’s co-producers and editor Andrew Kukura and cinematographer Jesse BeecherMark Schulte, education director of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, will introduce. The Pulitzer Center supports the work of journalists around the world, and part of what the director and producers will discusss is the important work that journalists do and how they made the film.

‘CIRCUS WITHOUT BORDERS’ is the story of two extraordinary men who bring circus to their communities and use it to help the youth. Northern Light Productions filmed it over 7 years and watched as both circuses had amazing triumphs (both made it to the world stage) and heart wrenching challenges. The Inuit community struggles from a high suicide rate connected to their colonial past and a suicide happened in the circus troupe during filming.

The Pulitzer Center has selected this film because it is a very positive way of showing the connectedness of humanity despite where we come from or how different we look, and because it is a very positive treatment of how to choose a positive path despite difficult and challenging circumstances. The best part are the two main characters who are inspirational and show their youth how to dream and then how to realize their dreams.  It is fun to watch and engages young audiences from beginning to end. It has worldwide distribution and is playing on Air Canada flights.  ‘CIRCUS WITHOUT BORDERS’ has screened in film festivals across the country and now around the world.
